Pleien Dance Company
New in 2009
PLEIEN DANCE COMPANY
"Pleien" pronounced 'play in' is an old Dutch/Middle English word that means 'leap for joy, dance, rejoice, be glad'. It's possibly how the word "play" originated. Our dancers are often 'playing' around when improvising and creating new movement for original choreographic works; we have fun and celebrate the joy of dance!
Pleien Dance Company is a new repertory performing company of young people who share a love of dance and a desire to bring the art of modern dance to the community. We have modeled our company after several other children and youth dance companies throughout the United States and abroad.
Dance company members perform two annual public performances, A "Works in Progress" Dance Concert which is held in January and the "Spring Dance Concert" which is held in May. In addition, members will perform at a few community events and festivals throughout the year, which may include performances at nursing homes, community centers, and local town festivals. Dancers who have been members for longer than one year may also have the opportunity to travel and perform with other childrens' dance companies throughout the U.S. and beyond: example- daCi (dance and the Child international) & USA conferences.
The goals of Pleien Dance Company are to:
*Creative choreographic works together and experience working with guest artists/choreographers from the Buffalo community and beyond.
*Learn and perform Repertory Etudes™, short dances based on signature works of American choreographers, created by The American Dance Legacy Institute; curated and directed by Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg.
* Share a love of dance with the community.
* Increase people’s awareness of and appreciation for creative and modern dance.
* Dance amongst a group of friends who respect and admire each other’s unique ways of moving.
Who Becomes a Member?
Dedicated students, ages 7 to 18, with at least two years of dance experience or by the invitation of the instructor are welcome to be a part of the Pleien Dance Company; dancers do not audition. As a member, dancers have the chance to learn choreographic works in a variety of dance styles as well as perform their own original works. The focus is on team work and performance. Dancers must be focused, disciplined, able to take directions and learn steps, and be able to work with a group of people. They must also have an understanding of the hard work involved in preparing for a performance and have a love of dance and performing. Being a member is a large commitment, but also a wonderful and rewarding experience.
Rehearsal Policy & Attire
Due to the nature of Pleien Dance Company, dancers must commit to being a part of the company for the entire year. Dancers attend rehearsals once a week on Saturday’s with additional rehearsals scheduled near performance dates if necessary. In addition to attending company rehearsals, students are required to attend at least one other dance technique class at their appropriate age level, Creative Modern, or Modern Technique/Composition.
Perfect attendance is required for members. During rehearsals, we will be building works together and if dancers are missing, it is much more difficult to accomplish our best work. Therefore, to ensure a positive feeling of support and community within the group, students who miss more than 1-2 rehearsals in a session will be given an appropriately simplified part in the production.
Members must wear a solid color leotard and footless or convertible tights for rehearsals. They must also provide their own black leotard, black footless tights and a skin tone camisole leotard for performances.
Membership fees are divided into four payments (please see tuition) schedule. Other payment plans may be arranged if needed. Financial aid is available for students in need. Fees include all rehearsal, performing, guest artists, costume, costs, etc. Costumes, other than leotards and tights, will be provided and will remain the property of Creative Dance for Children Classes/Pleien Dance Company.
